Claiming Crown Saturday

Saturday marks the 21st edition of the Claiming Crown. This day of racing now held at Gulfstream Park was created to celebrate claiming horses and their owners. The event began in 1999 at Canterbury Park as a collaboration between the National HBPA and TOBA. The Shakopee, Minn. racetrack hosted Claiming Crown 10 times from 1999 to 2010 while

Philadelphia Park (now Parx) was the site in 2002, Ellis Park in 2007, and Fair Grounds in 2011. Gulfstream Park has been the home of Claiming Crown since 2012.  Claiming Crown began with six races and $500,000 in purse money and now offers nine races and $1.11 million in purses.

Canterbury Park simulcasts Gulfstream Park daily. Handicapping contests on Saturday include a Horse Player World Series Super Satellite that includes the first eight races at Gulfstream as well as the In The Money Handicapping Contest where participants must navigate through the entire card for a $400 prize pool.
