Why So Political, one of seven horses trained by Jason Olmstead, won the $59,400 Northlands Futurity by one length covering 350 yards in 17.823 seconds. Gonzalo Valles Jr. was aboard for owner Cavenaugh Quarter Horses, LLC. The fastest qualifier in trials held two weeks ago, Why So Political broke inwardly from the starting gate but quickly found her stride and was pulling away at the
wire. She paid $5.20 to win. Wagering favorite Sheza a Sugar Momma was second and Ourrelentlessdynasty finished third. Olmstead runners finished first through sixth and last in the nine-filly field of 2-year-olds.

Ding Dang Dulce fell to his knees at the break of the $36,675 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby nearly unseating rider Fernando Fonseco-Soto but still managed to win the 400-yard dash by a nose over longshot Terrorizer. Ding Dang Dulce, owned and trained by Haley Hobbs, is the fifth horse in track history to win the Northlands Futurity as a 2-year-old and the Quarter Horse Derby at 3.
“I didn’t think he was going to have a chance once he fell down like that but he has a huge heart and he showed it today,” Hobbs said.
Ding Dang Dulce paid $7.60 to win in a final time of 20.063 seconds. Uncle Redheads, the prohibitive favorite, was third, one-half length behind Terrorizer, both trained by Olmstead.
