The Results are in: Round 1 R2K Feb 2, 2008

The winner in the opening week of Road to Kentucky is Kalib Martin with 2128 points, good enough for $500 in cash, $100 satellite entry , and three handicapper of the year points.
Kalib played mainly price horses. In three of the double point races he took mid-range prices and won twice. The shortest price he selected was in Gulfstream race 5 where he took a 5/2 in a short field, ran second, but got DQd into first. Otherwise his selections ranged from 6-1 to 56-1. That bomb ran 2nd in the 6th at Gulfsteam, the Swale, a double point race, and earned 620 points. He also saw a 34-1 selection in the 4th at the Stream run second for 302 points.
The bonus races proved to be crucial to R2K success as is often the case. Kalib scored in all four, coming away with the winner Big Glen in the WEBN for 528 and the Whirlaway winner Barrier Reef for 446, the aforementioned bomb in the Swale and a third in the Lewis for 56.
Of the 13 contest races, he had three winners (two were double points), two seconds (both at huge odds and one at double points) and two thirds.
There were 613 entrants with the median score being 760 points but the range was from Kalib’s highwater mark all the way down to zero.
Road to Kentucky continues Saturday with the Fair Grounds card plus the Turf Paradise Derby.
