That Type Ofa Deal raced in the back of the four-horse Minnesota Derby field only looking like a winner inside the sixteenth pole of the 1 mile 70 yard race when, under leading jockey Manuel Americano, the 3-year-old Minnesota-bred surged past pace-setter Navarre and rail-hugging Perfect Gamble to a one-length win in the $75,000 stake at Canterbury Park. Trainer Joel Berndt had hoped for a tracking trip and That Type Ofa Deal provided it. “Let them go and then run on by,” Berndt said.
That Type Ofa Deal was bred by his owner Suzanne Stables. He returned $19.80 to win in a final time of 1:43.89. Perfect Gamble was second, Navarre third and 1 to 9 favorite How Bout That Curt was fourth.
“He’s a slow developing horse,” Berndt said of That Type Ofa Deal, “and every work, every race he got better, better, better and peaked today.”
The betting favorite Summer Winner was victorious in the $75,000 Minnesota Oaks. The filly is co-owned by Pete Mattson and trainer Tim Padilla. Finishing second was Nancy’s Shawl who also is trained by Padilla and owned by Mattson.
Summer Winner set the pace under Alonso Quinonez while Nancy’s Shawl, at 11 to 1 odds, was taken off the pace by Luis Fuentes. Approaching the quarter pole Fuentes and Nancy’s Shawl launched a bid on the outside taking a short lead by the eighth pole only to see Summer Winner and Quinonez battle back to take charge at the sixteenth pole and hold on to win by one-half length.
“That was a great race. They both had an equal chance to win,” Padilla said. “[Summer Winner] just outkicked [Nancy’s Shawl]. She’s just faster.”
Summer Winner paid $4.60. Heavenly Captive was third. Final time for the Minnesota Oaks was 1:41.01.
Americano won his fourth race on the eight-race card when he rode Thunders Rocknroll to victory in the finale, boosting the Minnesota-bred mare’s career earnings to $512,137. Americano also won the fourth race on Charlies Mint and the sixth race on Crew Dragon.
Handle for the card was $872,172.
