Service for ‘Pastor Ed’ Underwood Saturday

Ed Underwood, who passed away last week following a lengthy illness, will be remembered Saturday during a service in the Dean Kutz Memorial Chapel in the Canterbury Park stable area. Known as ‘Pastor Ed’, Underwood served as Racetrack Chaplain at Canterbury Park for more than a decade but also assisted previous chaplains at the Shakopee, Minn. horse track since 1985.

‘Pastor Ed’ was dedicated to those that live and work on the backside, showing compassion and love not only through spiritual guidance but also offering assistance to all in need, directing many to

outside resources such as medical care and counseling. Ed stood tall during a long and excruciating illness, strong in his faith. He is survived by wife Patrice, pictured above with Ed, and family, including a son, grandchildren and a great grandchild. His obituary can be found here.

Ed was presented with the Sampson Minnesota HBPA Lifetime Achievement Award last summer, acknowledging a lifetime of dedication to Minnesota horse racing.

 

 

Visitation, open to the public, begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel Saturday, Feb. 18 with the service at 11:00 a.m. Lunch and fellowship follows the service in the track kitchen.

There will be two parking options. Access through the stable gate will be allowed with limited parking near and around the chapel. A shuttle will transport guests that park in the frontside main lot beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pick-up point for the shuttle is the Casino Lobby drive up.
