Northlands Futurity Headlines Tuesday’s 12-Race Quarter Horse Program

Canterbury Park’s Tuesday racing program, 12 races exclusive to quarter horses, features the $86,900 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, $49,775 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby, $30,000 Bob Morehouse Stakes and $20,000 Northlands Juvenile. Post time for the first race is 4:30 p.m.

The Northlands Futurity, being run for the 33rd time, will be the sixth race and offers the richest quarter horse purse of the meet. Leading trainer Jason Olmstead qualified six of the 10 entrants in trials held July 28 including the second fastest qualifier A Fabulos Painting, owned in part by Minnesota Wild goaltender Alex Stalock.

A Fabulos Painting had been winless in three career starts prior to winning his trial heat under jockey Nik Goodwin. Olmstead believes that if the 2-year-old, who may finally be putting things together mentally, remains composed “he can outrun them all.” Olmstead knows a little about winning the Northlands Futurity. He has done so four of the past five years. Goodwin will have the mount again.

The fastest qualifier is Jess One Lane trained by Vic Hanson and ridden by Ismael Suarez Ricardo. The colt has won two of four starts and was third as the betting favorite in the July 7 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity. He broke sharply in that race but made a costly cut to the inside and was beaten three-quarters of a length. “He drifted to the rail and that was that,” Hanson said. His qualifying trip two weeks ago was an improvement. On Tuesday he will break from post nine.  “That’s new country for him.  Hopefully he likes it out there. He’s good. He came back good [from the trial],” Hanson said.

Hanson also has Hr Storm On In qualified for the Quarter Horse Derby, the fifth race, and Olmstead has four entered including fastest qualifier Vf Politics N Chicks. The Bob Morehouse Stakes is restricted to horses bred in Minnesota and Olmstead has a strong hand there as well with three of the five horses in the 350 yard race including full brothers Pyc Jess Bite Mydust and Dickey Bob who won this race in 2018 and 2019.
