Minnesota Derby: An Overview

The video above introduces three of the nine candidates for the 2009 Minnesota Derby to be run on Saturday; A Steel Trap, Perfect Bull, and Nomorewineforeddie.

The $60,000 Minnesota Derby, whose roots trace back to 1974, has attracted a field of nine Minnesota breds for the 2009 renewal. The morning line favorite at 5/2 in the one mile and 70 yard derby is Perfect Bull. Owned by Red Dog Stables and trained by Bernell Rhone, Perfect Bull earned $31,848 this year. Leading jockey Dean Butler has the mount.
The Minnesota Oaks, with the same distance and purse as the Derby, has eight fillies entered. Chick Fight, owned by Bleu Valley Farm LLC, is the morning line favorite at 9/5. Trained by Mac Robertson, she won the $60,000 Northern Lights Futurity in 2008 and most recently was victorious in the $35,000 Frances Genter Stakes. Butler also takes this mount.
