March 19 News & Notes (3/19/2008)

A DRF Stable Watch Mail alert appeared in my inbox this week for trainer Tammy Domenosky so I figured it was time to check in with the trainer of my favorite horse Vazander. Domenosky has 11 horses in training at Hawthorne in Chicago, with two scheduled to start this week. Last year was her first at Canterbury Park. Her primary client was Kissoon Thoroughbreds, an annual CBY force. Domenosky has acquired a few new clients for the upcoming meet as well. It would be no surprise to see a couple of talented 2-year-olds this summer for the Kissoons. Domenosky intends to get at least one start for each of her horses at Hawthorne and then ship to Shakopee in mid/late April. “I’m excited to come back to Minnesota,” she said. As for Vazander… well… he hasn’t found the winners’ circle in quite a while but I have a bankroll set aside for just that purpose.
Trainer Jamie Ness will be back this summer. He all but has the Tampa Bay Downs training title wrapped up for a second consecutive season. His stats: 139 – 51-18-18. That’s a 37% win rate and 63% in the money. His Lookinforthesecret just crushed in the $75,000 Turf Sprint at Tampa on Saturday. Nothing but money for this horse that, under the new Claiming Crown rules, is again eligible for the August 2 event.
Jockey Seth Martinez has been ablaze at Turf Paradise after getting off to a slow start. He leads all riders with 98 victories. Also in the top 10 in Phoenix are Ry Eikleberry, Juan Rivera, and Scott Stevens.
2-Year-Old in training sale
The Minnesota Thoroughbred Association has scheduled a 2-year-old in training sale for Saturday, May 10 with an under tack preview on the 9th. The catalog is not yet finalized but will be soon. More information is available at http://www.mtassoc.com/ .This is an opportunity to jump into horse ownership early in the Canterbury meet. A new ownership seminar, focusing on the sale, will be held at Canterbury on Saturday, April 26 at noon.
