Into The Break

When Primarily Gold crossed the wire to win the 12th race Sunday, it meant a hiatus for live horse racing until Thursday, July 25 at 6:00 p.m. —  264 hours to post time.  Racing action takes a break to make way for Twin Cities Summer Jam, a three-day music festival July 18 through 20, the first meaningful event to take place in the reconfigured Canterbury infield.

The main track will be open for training Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for limited hours and the training track will be in use each day.  Concert set-up began immediately after Sunday’s final race.

Concert crowds are expected to surpass 15,000 each night with Friday likely to be the most popular when Aerosmith takes the stage.

Cristian Esqueda Leads Q jocks; Olmstead seeking fifth training title

Although quarter horse jockey Cristian Esqueda missed several Shakopee race days while riding at Remington Park and Ruidoso, he made the most of his time here and enters the break as the leading rider with 10 wins from 37 mounts. Jorge Torres and Nik Goodwin each have nine wins.

Jason Olmstead leads Q trainers with 15 wins, 10 of those when using Esqueda. Olmstead has won the training title four consecutive seasons. Stacy Charette-Hill is in second with 11 wins and Clinton Crawford is third with nine.

Jackpot

The Pick Five Jackpot was hit Sunday. The winning ticket paid $34,475.65.

While that comes as disappointing news for those chasing but not holding the correct ticket, there will be a late pick four carryover of $3,011.06 when racing returns.
