Minnesota horse racing supports more than $400 million in economic activity and 5,500 jobs; and today it’s at a crossroads.
For generations, horse racing has been part of Minnesota’s story. And it’s so much more than what happens at the racetrack. It’s the farms where horses are bred and raised. The trainers and jockeys who dedicate their lives to the sport. The veterinarians, farriers, feed suppliers, truck drivers and small businesses that depend on the industry.
But today, Minnesota horse racing is at a crossroads.
Purses at Canterbury Park have been cut nearly in half since 2022.
As racing becomes more competitive across the country, owners, breeders and trainers are taking their horses to states where they can earn more. Fewer horses means fewer breeders. Fewer breeders means fewer farms. And fewer farms means fewer businesses and jobs supported by the industry.
Other states have taken steps to strengthen their racing industries—and Minnesota can too.
With the right support, we can bring competitive racing back to Minnesota, encourage owners and breeders to stay, protect the businesses that depend on the industry and give the next generation a chance to experience the sport we’ve been proud to call our own for more than 40 years.
