Don Hoover: Race Horse Owner and Breeder

Donald H. Hoover

By Megan Johnson

Donald Hoover, from Richfield, got into horse racing when his father talked him into buying his first horse and he’s owned horses ever since. Owning horses soon turned into breeding two a year for Hoover. He currently has five horses, all of which train with Nancy Sheehan.

Hoover mainly races at Canterbury and Prairie Meadows but has raced in Tampa in the past as well.

“My first homebred that won, Smoken Danni, is one of my favorite memories of racing,” said Hoover. “She did a good job.”

Thus far this season Hoover’s horses have two wins, a second, and four third-place finishes from 14 races.

Hoover explains that the biggest thing he’s learned while owning horses is to have patience.

When he isn’t coming to the racetrack to watch his horses run, he stays busy as a Mechanical Contractor. Hoover also enjoys a good game of golf on his off time as well.
