Dirt Road Queen Takes Highway to Victory

Dirt Road Queen

Dirt Road Queen, owned by Robert and Julie Petersen of Cokato, Minn., won the $21,250 Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ and North Central Quarter Horse Racing Association Derby Sunday at Canterbury Park. The 3-year-old quarter horse filly, ridden by Seth Martinez and trained by William Harris, was bred in Minnesota by the owners.

Dirt Road Queen broke inward from the starting gate but Martinez quickly straightened her and took command, winning the 400 yard race by 1 1/4 lengths in 20.005 seconds. Dirt Road Queen paid $21.40 to win.

“I knew she breaks well,” Harris said. “I hoped she could get good position and go on with it. She’s a racehorse. She breaks and runs.”

Cr Strawflyn Bux, ridden by Rusty Shaw, was second and Readi to be Famous and Marcus Swiontek finished third.
