Canterbury Park officials referred to the evening’s program of 10 quarter horse races as The Fastest Day In Minnesota Sports and it lived up to the hype as Danjer won the $62,739 Bank of American Canterbury Park Championship Challenge in track record time of 21.062 seconds for 440 yards, beating the 2011 mark of 21.162.
Danjer has now won eight of 16 career starts and $563,332 in purse earnings for breeder, owner and trainer Dean Frey. “He’s good but you still have to run,” Frey said of the 4-year-old whose first career win came at Canterbury in 2018. He has since won races at three other tracks. Danjer chased and caught Eagles Fly Higher to win by a neck with Cody Smith aboard. He paid $4.20 to win. Frey indicated the next stop is Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico where Danjer has won four times. The BOA Championship Challenge, a grade 3 race, was the first graded victory for Danjer.
Zoomn On Bye won the $45,075 Gopher State Derby with Marcus Swiontek riding. The 3-year-old prevailed by a neck from the inside post beating Little Bit of Hero. He is trained by Cory Rumsey for owner B. Thomas Pick and returned $11.40.
Lynnder 16 won the $34,415 Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge by a neck with jockey Berkley Packer. The 4-year-old filly paid $4.00 to win as the wagering favorite. She is owned by Tom Maher and Richard Tobin and is trained by Canterbury’s leading trainer Jason Olmstead. Final time for 400 yards was 19.753 seconds.
Olmstead also trained the winner of the $67,335 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity, Relentless Seis. He is owned by Maher and brother Bill. Denny Velazquez rode the winner who paid $11.20.
Fly Miss Corona Jess, the fastest qualifier in trials held June 17, won the $49,575 Gopher State Futurity by a head over favorite Jess Rocket Man in 17.493 seconds. The 2-year-old filly is trained by Clinton Crawford and was ridden by Jorge Torres for owner Cavenaugh Quarter Horses. She paid 11.20 to win.
Crawford teamed up with Packer to win the Canterbury Distance Challenge, the longest race on the card at 870 yards, with High On Chablis in 46.336 seconds. High On Chablis is owned by Jerry Blackmon, Mike Schau and Connie Nobles. He paid $6.20 as the favorite.
