Canterbury’s Richest Quarter Horse Race To Be Run July 8

With a purse set for $146,400, the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity is Canterbury’s richest quarter horse race and second richest race of the season. The 350 yard dash features 2-year-olds who had the fastest qualifying times from the June 16th trials (featured below).

Horse notes provided by MQHRA Executive Director, Jen Perkins.

#1 Maghelene   5-1 Morning Line odds

Second Fastest time in trials

Owned by leading QH owner Thomas Scheckel

Trained by leading QH trainer Jason Olmstead

Ridden by leading QH jockey Cristian Esqueda

Maghelene also boasts a fancy family history. Her dam, Belle Helene was second in the 2013 $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso and has career earnings of over $200,000. Belle Helene is also a half-sister to A Revenant, who won the 2016 $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) and earned over $600,000 in four career starts.

Trainer Jason Olmstead added that Maghelene is “a classy filly that we had a good feeling about heading into trials and we hope to see her come back with a win.”

#2 Miss Energy P    9-2

Third fastest time in trials

Owned by Michael Pohl

Trained by Stacy Charette-Hill

Ridden by Jorge Torres

With 2-year-old horses, pedigree can be the key to finding possible talent. Miss Energy P is out of the First Down Dash mare First Down Energy, which makes her a half-sister to Terrific Energy, a multiple graded stakes winning mare. Terrific Energy is now a broodmare and is the dam of graded stakes winners Terrific Synergy and Thermonuclear Energy.

 #3 Bhr Flashing Effort     8-1

Currently undefeated this meet

Owned by Broken Heart Ranch

Trained by Bob Johnson

Ridden by Jake Samuels

Bhr Flashing Effort is already a stakes winner and is two for two at this distance of 350 yards; as the sixth fastest qualifier, he’ll likely be overlooked and should provide some value in exotics.

#4 Jess Doin Time     10-1

Owned by Tom Pouliot

Trained by Jason Olmsted

Ridden by Julian Serrano

“We saw a rough winter for this horse after she got sick and was unable to run at Remington Park. She has a lot of room to improve, but she pulled off a great run in trials,” Trainer Jason Olmstead commented.

#5 Dashin My Lady     10-1

Owned by Kendrix Brothers

Trained by winningest trainer of this race Edward Hardy

Ridden by Berkley Packer

#6 Mildred Didrickson     3-1

Had fastest time of 17.782 in Northlands trials, winning by a length and a half

Owned by Milena Kwiecien

Trained by Jason Pascoe

Ridden by Nakia Ramirez

Fastest qualifier Mildred Didrickson is going to be the horse to beat in the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity. She broke her maiden at Remington Park by a length before winning her Northlands trial impressively by a length and a half.

#7 Chicken Lips     12-1

Owned by Milena Kwiecien

Trained by Jason Pascoe

Ridden by David Brown

#8 Cashair     15-1

Owned by Leo Butell

Trained by Jason Olmstead

Ridden by Denny Velazquez

Cashair is “coming back from a good winter and had a few little issues in the spring, but had all of the kinks worked out and ended up putting together a nice trial race,” said trainer Jason Olmstead.

#9 Devins Project     15-1

Owned by Kenneth Ruthardt

Trained by Shawna Manriquez

Ridden by Tanner Thedford

#10 Shes Sizzling      5-1

Owned by Joyce and Erik Lehtinen

Trained by Jason Pascoe

Ridden by Nik Goodwin

Shes Sizzling was impressive as the winner of the final trial, but keep in mind that the track was tightening up and getting faster as the day went on following a drizzling trial morning.

additional news and notes from Jim Wells

The quarter horses are front and center on today’s card, kicking it off with five consecutive races, four of them stakes races highlighted by the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity with a purse of $146,400. The Futurity  will be run as the fifth race on the card.

The Bob Morehouse stakes, worth $40,400, will be run as race two, followed by the Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile with a purse of $20,000.

The Derby is scheduled fourth on the card and is worth $78,450.

The 3-1 morning line favorite in the Futurity is Mildred Didrickson, trained by Jason Pascoe and ridden by Nakia Ramirez. They will break from the No. 6 hole in the 10-horse field.

Pascoe is most concerned with horses trained by Jason Olmstead and Tracy Charette-Hill.

Olmstead’s best entry, Maghelene, is breaking from the No. 1 hole under Cristian Esqueda at 5-1. Miss Energy, trained by Charette-Hill, is 9/2 out of the No. 2 hole. “Those are two very good horses,” said Pascoe. “I think those are the ones for us to worry about.”

Pascoe will use Ramirez, a newcomer at Canterbury, in this premier event . They hooked up during Remington Park’s last meet.

“She’s very professional,” he said. “She came up here to ride all of ours and has done an excellent job.”

Olmstead will saddle the 6/5 favorite in the Morehouse, Pyc Jess Bite Mydust.  He’ll also saddle 5/2 favorite First of 15 in the Derby. Charette-Hill has the 3/1 morning line pick in the Juvenile, Chocolatepaintedkiss.
