34 tournaments in 17 days in Midwest’s premier poker room
The 14th annual Fall Poker Classic begins Saturday, Oct. 4 at Canterbury Park. Officials expect this year’s event to be the largest ever held at the Shakopee, Minn. casino. The Fall Poker Classic offers poker players 34 different tournaments over 17 consecutive days with total prize money estimated to exceed $1.5 million.
“This is by far the most popular event at Canterbury,” Senior Director of Casino Operations Michael Hochman said. Last year players from more than 40 states and several countries traveled to Canterbury for the Fall Poker Classic. “We have a very robust poker community in Minnesota and we draw so well from around the country. The mix of players and games makes the Fall Poker Classic very special and extremely competitive.”
The Fall Poker Classic began in 2001, prior to the poker boom, in a poker room that had been open just 19 months. That year there were 953 players, twelve tournaments, and less than $200,000 in prize money, a stark contrast to 2013 when there were nearly 6,000 entries competing for seven times that amount.
“Poker tournaments remain popular and are a large part of our daily business. I expect more growth this year in the Fall Poker Classic,” Hochman said.
Buy-ins to the tournaments range from $100 to $1,000 with a new event beginning each day at noon and 6:30 p.m. Highlights include Tag Team No Limit Hold ‘Em, H.O.R.S.E., a Bounty event, Omaha-8, 7-Card Stud, Pot-Limit Omaha, a Seniors and Ladies-only event, and the $1,000 Championship main event.
