Canterbury Park Moves Three Quarter Horse Stakes to Sept. 13

MN Futurity, MN Derby and Cash Caravan date changed at MQHRA request

Canterbury Park racing officials, at the behest of the Minnesota Quarter Horse Racing Association board of directors, announced today that three Minnesota-bred quarter horse stakes races previously scheduled for Sept. 9 will now be run on Sept. 13. The $40,000 added Minnesota Futurity, the $40,000 added Minnesota Derby and the $20,000 added Cash Caravan will be moved to a Wednesday program that will begin at 4:00 p.m. CT.

The change is being made to avoid a scheduling conflict with Prairie Meadows racetrack in Altoona, Iowa. Prairie Meadows is running futurity trials on the 9th that would cause many riders to be unavailable to ride at Canterbury. The Cash Caravan is being rescheduled for the second time after the race card on Aug. 23 was cancelled due to excessive heat. The Minnesota Futurity and Minnesota Derby had long been part of the Minnesota Festival of Champions, a day of racing restricted to horses bred in the state. The Festival will still take place on Sept. 9 with the six remaining thoroughbred stakes.
