We asked Jeff Maday, a handicapping expert and one of the Canterbury College instructors, what people can expect from the course.

What is Canterbury College?

Canterbury College was designed to teach “students” more about methods of picking winners and making smart wagers during a visit to the races.

Amy’s Challenge

Horse racing results are far from random.

The course intends to show novices how to begin finding ways to make successful predictions and increase the chance of having a winning day. The course begins with the very basics of racing and instructs how to read past performances and progresses with each session.

Who is the course aimed at?

Canterbury College, which began in the late 1990s, is for the beginner who wants to learn about horse race handicapping and also for the novice that may have some understanding but wants to discover even more.

What will attendees learn?

Canterbury College begins with the very basics of the sport.

Students learn more about the industry in general and then begin the journey of reading and understanding horse past performances, which are provided at each session. They then, as the course progresses, learn to use that knowledge to determine how a race will be run and which horses have the best chance of running well.

Pari-mutuel wagering is also an important piece of Canterbury College. Students will learn about the different types of wagers available and will begin to develop a wagering style that works for them.

What do you love about horse racing?

For those that like to place a wager and use their mental skills to provide an advantage, horse racing is one of the best bets around.

Like poker, and sports betting in many cases, the participant is not betting against the house but instead against other players. The available information, once it is understood, can be used to the player’s advantage.

As Paul Allen likes to say, you can “make money with your mind” when betting the horses.
