Who is the Horse of the Meet?

Hot Shot Kid

Twenty-eight races will be run over two days to conclude the 2019 live race meet. Within a season of races is the race for the top honor of being named Horse of the Race Meet. It’s not a monetary award, to gain that honor much money has already been made on the track, rather an award of merit and bragging rights knowing you owned or trained or rode the best of the best this season.

There will be supporters of Hot Shot Kid, winner of five races including four stakes, with another race yet Friday. Aria Gia found the winner’s circle five times as well, beating open company and winning a pair of state bred stakes. Beach Flower won the Lady Canterbury and HBPA Distaff. Satellite Storm found new life on the turf, winning three straight including the Mystic Lake Turf Sprint. Ready to Runaway had a stakes trifecta. Mr. Jagermeister ran but once, likely not enough to garner votes, but that win reminded us all why he was a fan favorite and 2018 Horse of the Meet.

There were many memorable performances throughout the past 64 days of racing and more will be occur this weekend.  Voters, including racing office officials, public handicappers and media members, will carefully consider their choices in all categories, and the selections will be tallied Saturday evening.

  1. Claim of the year? Satellite Storm was claimed for $12,500 and is running in the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes for a $100,000 purse on Saturday at Keeneland. If that’s not the claim of the year, I don’t know who is

    1. Satellite Storm was voted Canterbury Claimer of the Meet. Ready to Runaway was a very good claim at the Canterbury meet but only ran once for a price (to win the award a horse must run at least twice) and was claimed from that race. She went on to win three stakes races.
