Stachys Wins Zia Park Derby

Al and Bill Ulwelling of Elk River, MN won the $150,000 Zia Park Derby with their 3-year-old Kentucky-bred thoroughbred Stachys on Saturday at Zia Park in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Stachys is trained by Mike Biehler and was ridden by Eddie Martin Jr.

As the betting favorite, he returned $4.00 for a $2.00 win wager.

The colt won the Dean Kutz Stakes at Canterbury Park this summer as well as the Manitoba Derby in Winnipeg. The Ulwellings were leading owners at the 2010 Canterbury race meet.
