Racehorse Owner : Tyler Stein

By Mari Ballinger

Age is just a number for horse owner Tyler Stein. Stein, who is now 18, has owned horses for four years. Originally from Texas, Stein and his family moved to South Dakota when he was 14 years old. In December 2018, Stein graduated from high school and decided to dream big.

Stein’s love of horses stemmed from the consistent trips to the rodeo with his dad when he was little. His dad owned horses and eventually handed off the torch to Stein. Starting on his own in 2015, Stein had three starts with a third place win.

“My favorite part about owning horses is seeing their progression,” said Stein. “From when I first get them to seeing them win their first race, it’s awesome.”

Stein currently has 11 quarter horses and runs them at Remington Park, Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Canterbury Park.

“I started racing at Canterbury just last year,” said Stein. “My all-time favorite racing memory is winning my first race here. That feeling is unforgettable.”

The responsibilities don’t stop there, though. Stein recently took and passed his training license test at Canterbury Park. He plans to go to Prairie Meadows where he will transition into training and eventually increase the number of horses he owns.

“Go for it,” Stein responded when asked if he had any advice for potential owners.

Stein is definitely one to watch. He sets the bar high and won’t stop until he gets there.
