News ‘n Notes: First of 15 Speeds to Top Qualifying Time

Northern Stars Racing Festival Highlights:

Hall of Fame Riders attended the Jockeys and Jeans Fundraiser June 23rd, benefiting the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. They signed autographs and met with fans. Edgar Prado, US Hall of Fame Jockey even managed to win the All Star Challenge race, riding Superstar Bea. The fundraiser generated an estimated $250,000 in donations, pushing the fund over the $1 million mark in its five years of existence.  Thank you to everyone for your generosity.

Sniper Kitten, trained by Mike Maker and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, won the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby Saturday night by a length in front of Nobrag Justfact, conditioned by local trainer Eric Heitzmann. Maker also trained winner of the Lady Canterbury Stakes, I’m Betty G.

Northern Stars Trainer’s Bonus

On Saturday trainer’s earned points for finish position throughout the 10-race card. The top five trainers received the following bonus money:

Robertino Diodoro          22    $2,000

McLean Robertson          22    $2,000

Joel Berndt                         13    $1,000

There also was a live bankroll handicapping contest. The players hammered away at the mutuel pools using a $500 live bankroll with which they had to wager at least half of what they had in each of six races.

Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby Trial Qualifiers

The super fast filly First of 15, winner of the Gopher State Derby, was the fastest qualifier from the trials held Sunday for the July 8 Quarter Horse Derby. Final purse will be $78,450.

Looking Forward:

-The Canterbury Carnival is coming to town and will be in Shire Square June 30 through July 5, during live racing.

-The Corgi Races & Cupcake Festival will be at the track on June 30. Corgis will race on the track as they compete for a spot in the July 4 Corgi Encore race.

-A special 4 p.m. first post will take place on July 3 for Canterbury’s Firework Spectacular. Live music and fireworks will follow live racing.
