The 29th edition of the $100,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity on July 10 accentuates Canterbury Park’s 2016 American Quarter Horse stakes schedule, announced today by racetrack officials. Total purse money for the 13 stakes races is estimated to reach $600,000, making it a record quarter horse stakes season for the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack.

“Canterbury Park is proud to offer the richest quarter horse stakes schedule in track history,” Vice President of Racing Operations Eric Halstrom said. “The Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity will continue to be a premier race in the Midwest, and the addition of the $65,000 Bank of America Canterbury Park Challenge Championship and the Merial Distaff Championship ensures that many of the best quarter horses in the country will travel to Shakopee this summer in an attempt to qualify for the 2016 Challenge Championships.”

Both Challenge Championship races are new to the stakes schedule; however Canterbury has a longstanding relationship with the Challenge series, having hosted races since 1995.

Purses for the annual Minnesota Derby and Minnesota Futurity will see a purse increase.

“We are proud to offer record purses for the Minnesota Futurity and Minnesota Derby, both longstanding championship events that are contested during the Minnesota Festival of Champions,” Halstrom said.

Canterbury Park’s 69-day racing season runs May 20 – Sept. 17. More information is available at www.canterburypark.com .
