Shakopee, MN — Humble Smarty won the 17th running of the $35,000 Honor the Hero Express by 7 ¾ lengths on Monday, setting a new track record of 56.1 seconds for five furlongs. The race was originally scheduled for the turf but was moved from the rain-soaked course to a main track listed as fast. Five of the 11 entrants scratched prior to post time.
Humble Smarty, owned and trained by Brett Creighton, was sent to the lead by jockey Dean Butler and was never challenged. “Brett told me to get him out of the gate and just sit there and look pretty,” Butler said. “That’s what I did.” The 7-year-old Arkansas-bred was the prohibitive favorite and paid $3.40.
Finishing second was Sharkiowa and rider David Cardoso. Third was Overthehump and Paul Nolan.
Racing at Canterbury Park continues Friday with a 7:00 pm post time.
