Fire N Guns Upset Winner of $40,400 Bob Morehouse Stakes

Three-time Morehouse winner Dickey Bob loses by a nose

Longshot Fire N Guns defeated prohibitive favorite Dickey Bob by a nose in the $40,400 Bob Morehouse Stakes Monday at Canterbury Park. Six-year-old quarter horse Dickey Bob, who has won 11 of 17 starts at Canterbury, failed to win his fourth consecutive Morehouse when a late charge by Fire N Guns and rider Ry Eikleberry proved just enough.

“Yeah, he got there,” said a relived Eikleberry, second in historical quarter horse wins and purse earnings at the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack, when the outcome of the photo finish was decided. Fire N Guns paid $22.60 to win. He was bred and is owned by Fred Pelzer and trained by Ralph Haglund. Final time for the 350 yards was 17.930 seconds.

The wait for a decision seemed interminable. “I just didn’t think we got this one,” Haglund said. “I felt very good coming into this race, however you have Dickey Bob to run against and Dickey Bob does hit this winner’s circle all the time.”

Dickey Bob was ridden by Luis Valenzuela and is trained by Jason Olmstead. Corona White Sox and Nik Goodwin finished third.
