Early Winner Pays $127 Followed By Eight Consecutive Favorites

The majority of wagering dollars in the win pool on Wednesday’s races 4 through 11 landed on the eventual race winner. Eight consecutive favorites prevailed with the largest price being Flash Flood at $6.60 in the sixth and the shortest being $2.80 when Gettingafterit won the ninth. The onslaught of chalk led to an $86.55 Pick 5 payout, the smallest of the meet thus far.

Many public handicappers padded their stats, selecting six winners on the 11-race program. Sometimes a race card breaks that way. Wise guys want to beat the favorite when they can but firing at hopeless longshots just to avoid picking chalk can lead to ruin as well. “Better to play chalk than do the ATM walk,” said Jay Lietzau, handicapper for the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Earlier in race two however Shattered Dreams won at 62 to 1 and paid $127.80, the largest win payout of the season. The win came as a result of Well Read ducking in sharply at the eighth pole while circling the field, dislodging jockey Alex Canchari and interfering with others. Canchari was able to walk off but did not ride the remainder of the card. He was seen on the backside this morning and is still listed on three mounts.

“When it gets hot, weird things happen,” track analyst Brian Arrigoni said. “We see the longshot of the year come in and then when you think it may be a good night for prices you get hit with eight consecutive favorites.”

Racing this evening begins at 5:10 pm. The temperatures are expected to rise all afternoon but not to the point where delaying or cancelling racing becomes a debate. The state vets continue to monitor the situation closely, as they do each day regardless of the temperature.
