Dogs Get Their Days At Canterbury Park

Popular races for Corgis, Wieners, Bassets and Bulldogs open to entrants

Canterbury Park is seeking dog owners looking to enter their pets in popular dog races held during the summer horse racing season. For more than a decade, the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack has featured the entertaining dog races in conjunction with a day of horse racing, often attracting crowds in excess of 10,000 fans. Canterbury is accepting registrations from owners with Corgis, Wiener Dogs, Bulldogs and Basset Hounds.

Registration, which coincides with National Puppy Day, begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23 HERE and continues through May 1 for all four breeds. There is no fee to register. A total of 72 dogs will race in heats each of the days with the top 12 of each breed advancing to the Best In Show Finals on Sept. 4. A lottery will be held to determine the entrants should any of the races be oversubscribed.

“The fun is definitely back at Canterbury Park this season,” Director of Entertainment Deb Schaber said. “The dog races have become so popular and really enhance a day of horse racing, exposing many new fans and families to the sport.” Schaber also plans to continue the popular unicorn and llama races as well as Extreme Race Day featuring camels and ostriches.

Dog owners and their pets compete primarily for fun but also for prizes provided by Canterbury. Entrants chosen to compete will also receive admission passes for the day of the event.
