Bell and Robertson Rewrite The Record Book

It was no surprise to find jockey Derek Bell and trainer Mac Robertson at the top of the leader board in their respective professions at the end of the meet. Most agreed at the start that it would be tough to topple either. It was the way they went it about it that was impressive.

Bell rode 93 winners from 340 mounts, breaking his own record set last year for Canterbury Downs/Park all-time win percentage with 27.35%. He also crushed the single season in-the-money percentage when his mounts hit the top three 63.24 percent of the time. His $1,381,223 in purses is an all-time record as well. He topped the $10 million mark for his Canterbury career in purse earnings. Bell’s total is $10,153,750. This was Bell’s sixth riding title at Canterbury.

Robertson was the leading trainer for the fourth time. His 77-win season is the second best in history. Pat Cuccurullo has the record with 91 wins but he had 350 starts in 1990 compared to Robertson’s 224 this season. Robertson’s 71.88 in-the-money percentage is the best ever in a single season and his win percentage of 34.38 is second. He won $1,224,782 in purse money, a Canterbury record. He is fifth on the all-time earnings list. His all-time win percentage, 27.89, is tops as is his all-time in-the-money percentage of 64.74.

Robertson won ten stakes races this meet. Bell won nine, all riding for Robertson.
