Track Opens For Training

Horse trailers began trickling through the stable gate on Monday. With the main track not opening until this morning there has been no urgency to ship to Shakopee. But now that training has begun, stall super Mark Stancato expects the pace to intensify. There are currently more than 200 horses on the backside.

Mac Robertson was on the grounds today to set up. Roughly 30 horses arrived at his barn. Mac is expected to stable more than 50 head here this summer. He will return to Kentucky tomorrow to ready Win Willy for the Kentucky Derby.

Tony Rengstorf, unseen in these parts for many years, is expected to ship a string here this spring. Randy Oberlander , who once was based here, will make a return. The past few years he has raced in Iowa. Always a sneaky turf trainer, expect Oberlander to make good use of the grass course at Canterbury Park.

Look for trainer Mike Hop to saddle many of the Curt Johnson’s SEJ Stables runners. Curt has been leading owner the past three meets. Justin Evans previously trained for SEJ but will not be returning to Canterbury this year.
