Brilliant Edison

A genius win from a horse with a genius namesake, the Robertino Diodoro-trained Edison won the $200,000 Canadian Derby (G3) Saturday at Northlands Park by 11 1/2 lengths. The three-year-old Florida bred colt broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park in January. Following a third place finish at Belmont Park, Edison made his way to the northland, winning an allowance optional claiming race at Canterbury by a half-length in June. He next won the $30,000 Harry Jeffrey Stakes at Assiniboia Downs July 16.  Owned by Fouad El Kardy, Bob Butz and Rick Running Rabbit, Edison was piloted by Rico Walcott and paid $7.20 to win. A logical spot to next see Edison would be the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby on Canterbury’s final race day Sept. 13.

Ladies Night

Canterbury Park was all about girl power and high class swag on Ladies Night. With a hat contest, fashion shows between races, and killer drink specials, girls’ night at the races was fancy at its finest. Drinks were served luge style, with specialty kinky cocktail malts and cosmopolitan martinis. The derby hat contest was fierce, with head garb that appeared to have stepped off the pages of vogue. A good time was had by all!

Jockey Standings

Ry Eikleberry and Alex Canchari are neck-in-neck in the jockey standings. Eickleberry chalked up two wins tonight- the 2nd race on Consolidation and the 4th race on Lord Avalon. The two riders are now tied with 49 wins each. Dean Butler trails closely with 44 wins.
