Sheza a Sugar Momma won her third futurity of the Canterbury Park mixed-meet by capturing the $46,600 Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity Thursday. Earlier in the meet she won the $49,000 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity and the $29,000 North Star State Futurity. The 2-year-old filly is owned by Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann. She is trained by the meet’s leading trainer Jason Olmstead. His 16-year-old son Ryder Olmstead rode the winner.
Sheza a Sugar Momma broke well but Olmstead lost his right stirrup and never regained it. He managed nonetheless to steer the filly to victory holding off a surging Superona by a neck. “It was all her, to be honest,” the younger Olmstead said. Iza B Slick was third. Final time for the 350 yards was 18.369 seconds. The winner paid $2.20. Sheza a Sugar Momma has now won three of six starts and $74,867 in purses.
Jason Olmstead also won the $48,000 Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby with Spicy Cartel who paid $10.40. Owned by Magaly Sanchez, Spicy Cartel was ridden by Armando Alvidrez. Final time for 400 yards was 20.313 seconds.
“When she came out of [the gate] she took a while to get ahold of herself but she finished strong,” Alvidrez said.
Straight Takela Nite had the lead early and finished second one-half length behind the winner and a neck in front of the other Olmstead entry Sophey. Wagering favorite Holy Dynasty was fourth in the eight-horse Derby.
The program began with Foxy Cowgirl winning the $22,800 Cash Caravan. Angel Ramirez won for trainer Edward Ross Hardy and owners Luedemann, Corey Wilmes and Cole Morehead. Foxy Cowgirl paid $3.60 as the favorite. Relentless Legacy was second and Half a House was third. Final time for the only 440-yard race of the meet was 22.053 seconds.
Jason Olmstead won the quarter horse training title for the 12th consecutive season with 15 wins. Ryder Olmstead won the riding title, the first of his career, with 10 wins.
