Jockey Luis Quinonez broke both of his arms in a spill at Lone Star Park on Sunday and will be out of action for at least six weeks, said his agent, Richard McNaughton. McNaughton said Quinonez is hopeful he will be back riding for the opening-day card at Remington Park on Aug. 19.
Quinonez was injured in the fourth race when his mount, Henerita Mystery, broke down and threw him while racing midpack along the rail in a $5,000 claimer for fillies and mares at a mile. Quinonez told McNaughton that he was injured when stepped on by other horses. Henerita Mystery was euthanized.
Quinonez was transported to Baylor Hospital in Irving, Texas, on Sunday and was treated and released. McNaughton said the rider was meeting with surgeons on Monday. One of his arms is fractured and the other has a clean break, said McNaughton.
Quinonez is the sixth-leading rider at Lone Star, which will race through July 18. He has won with 20 of 137 mounts at the meet. Quinonez, whose first win as a rider came at Canterbury in 1989, is a career winner of 2,920 races.
